NOTE FROM THE EDITOR
Since President Donald Trump unveiled his reciprocal tariff plans earlier this month, we’ve been hearing about talks between the U.S. and countries targeted by the duties.
With most of those increased levies on pause until July, nations like Japan, Vietnam, India and the U.K. have all met with the Trump administration or signaled a willingness to make concessions. But what about China?
The country is currently subject to a combined tariff toll of 145%, not counting sector-specific duties. However, despite Trump's claims that China has been in negotiations with the U.S., the message from Beijing has a much different tenor.
On Thursday, China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the U.S. and China are not currently engaged in negotiations around tariffs, a day after Trump said the two countries have been in contact “every day.”
